I will start off by saying I am not paleo. I have had first hand experience with how successful the paleo diet can be because my mom started it a couple years ago and has seen amazing results. Other family members and friends had similar successes while on the paleo diet so I became curious. I decided to write a brief description of the diet so people could understand it and try it if they were interested when my mom got her blood work back recently and her doctor informed her that her glucose levels are the best in her practice because of her diet! What I knew going into my research is this diet gets real tangible results, that doesn’t mean that it is for everyone.
What is the paleo diet?
The paleolithic diet is based on what our ancestors would have eaten in a time of hunting and gathering before agriculture. The paleo diet is based on the belief that the metabolism has not adapted fast enough to be able to handle foods that are now available because of agriculture such as legumes, grains, dairy and especially processed foods. The paleo diet mostly includes meat, fish, vegetables and fruit.
Why do it?
The Paleo diet is believed to optimize your health, prevent disease and help with weight loss. It achieves these results because of simple nutritional reasons. The paleo diet includes:
- high protein
- low carbs
- low sugar (lower glycemic index)
- High healthy fat intake (omegas)
- High potassium
- low sodium
- high intake of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants
These are the properties of a paleo diet when done right. You can tell just from reading this list that this is a healthy diet but why has it become so popular in the last five years?
Because it is SO effective for many people and you can see and feel the results very quickly.
Not only does the paleo diet go back to what our bodies originally digested it also forces us to be more conscious about what is in the food we are eating and what it takes for our bodies to digest it. Many people have recently become aware of a sensitivity or intolerance to certain food groups like dairy or wheat. Others just find that they have more energy and are more efficient when they eat certain food groups like vegetable or protein. These are important things we need to pay attention to when choosing the best diet. When you cut out processed foods, wheat, legumes, dairy and anything else you couldn’t find while hunting and gathering you are going back to basics and resetting your body. This is a great way to find out what foods are making you feel sick, or tired and what foods are fueling you to be your best, most energized and healthy self.
Try the Paleo diet for at least 30 days and see how it changes your body and life. If it seems impossible try being slightly paleo or 50 percent paleo! It will still make a difference and sometimes changing your habits in a more gradual way really makes them stick!
