These days, most of us are at least fairly conscious about what we put in our bodies. We think about the chemicals used to grow conventional food and we try to stay away from preservatives and artificial dyes. Recently I have become equally aware of what I am putting ON my body. Is lathering sunscreen full of chemicals really much different than eating a GMO peach? Our skin is the biggest organ in our body, 60% of chemicals in our cosmetics can end up in our bloodstream which is equal to about 5 pounds of cosmetics being absorbed by our bodies. That’s pretty scary. We put a lot of dangerous chemicals on our bodies and we need to stop!
Here are some of my favorite natural, healthy cosmetics to get you started!
1. l’uvalla Hydrating Milk Cleanser $27.99:
All of their products are certified organic, 100% natural and sustainable, fair-trade and vegan. They have no synthetic ingredients and they work as well, or in most cases much better than the products you’ve been using. The milk cleanser is $27.99 but you only need the smallest amount to wash your face, so it lasts a long time and is totally worth it. You can use it as a hydrating mask as well. All the products smell absolutely amazing, so you get that aromatherapy while washing! I bought it at Whole Foods and got to try a few of their other products which were equally amazing.
2. Acure Dry Shampoo $9.99:
All of their products are sustainable and organic. They are free of parabens, sulfates, phthalates, synthetic fragrances and harmful preservatives and artificial colors. That list contains most of the bad things you might find in a cosmetic. This dry shampoo is awesome for on the go and super affordable at $9.99. I use a spray when I’m at home but keep this in my gym or travel bag to use anywhere when I need a refresher! It works great and has some amazing ingredients like argan stem cells and CoQ10. I also love the citrus ginger argan oil which you can use for just about anything. Try their regular shampoos as well. Most shampoos contain sodium laureth sulfate, an anionic detergent and very effective foaming agent. It is proven to cause skin irritation in most people and is linked to cancer. This is one of the first things you can take out of your cosmetic regimen because it is very unnecessary.
3. Elta MD Sunscreen $25:
Chemical sunscreens work by scattering or absorbing the sun’s rays, where as physical sunscreens work by blocking the sun’s rays and work immediately! As you have already learned from our previous post about sun protection, chemical sunscreens are known to disrupt the hormone system and be toxic to the skin. Neither type of sunscreen is perfect, so wear long sleeves and a hat, but mineral sunscreens are at least natural and don’t absorb into the skin as much as chemical sunscreens do.
I use the UV Clear facial sunscreen every day and it works amazingly well and is great for sensitive skin. It is fragrance-free, oil-free, paraben-free and noncomedogenic. It helps calm acne, rosacea and discoloration and has antioxidants to help absorb free radicals. They also have every other type of sunscreen. I like their sport sunscreen for the beach or hike and the spray for fast application.
4. Andalou Naturals 1000 Roses Body Lotion $9.95:
Andalou Naturals is another amazing company. They create products that are natural, at least 70% certified organic, and fair trade. They also use fruit stem cell science. Each fruit stem cell has different benefits, check them out here at http://andalou.com/index.php/nature-knowledge/fruit-stem-cell-science.html
I love this lotion, it smells incredible and makes my skin look and feel amazing. I have tried some of their other products as well and they are equally effective. Pick your favorite scent and try the whole line!
5. Josie Maran Argan Love Your Lips Hydrating Lipstick $22:
This product is free of paragons, sulfates and phthalates. It is a lipstick, gloss and balm all in one. There is a clear outer layer that hydrates and creates shine and the core is highly pigmented color. It is the perfect combination for healthy, beautiful lips! You can feel good about lathering your lips in these nourishing ingredients. Lipstick is one of the first things I went natural with, because it’s your lips! You consume more of your lipstick than you might think, so make it free of chemicals. I also have the Argan Matchmaker Powder Foundation and it is equally amazing. I will definitely try her other products!
These are some of my favorite products, but there are so many good natural and healthy sustainable products out there. Try them all, there are plenty of affordable and effective natural products out there! It is just as important to be aware of what we are putting ON our bodies as it is to know what we are putting IN our bodies. Choose a company you can feel good about supporting and try to develop an awareness of what the ingredients are and what they do. If we all support the products we believe in, we can work to change the market by voting with our dollar.
